When I founded Development Beyond Learning (DBL) over 15 years ago, I never imagined the global journey it would take us on. From our beginnings in Sydney to our current reach across London and Singapore, we’ve had the privilege of developing early talent in diverse cultural contexts. This experience has given us unique insights into the universal challenges and opportunities in nurturing young professionals.
A world of differences, a core of similarities
Our work has taken us from Australia to Asia and eventually to the UK. And then, accross Europe, North and South America. While each location presents its own cultural nuances, we’ve discovered that the fundamental needs of early career professionals remain remarkably consistent.
No matter where in the world they are, young talent seeks environments where they can develop their skills, build relationships and see a clear path for career progression. They need support in transitioning from education to the workplace, a gap that has continued to widen over the years.
The universal language of soft skills
One of our most significant findings is the global relevance of soft skills. Regardless of industry or geography, skills like effective communication, adaptability and leadership are universally valued.
These observations reinforced our belief in the importance of a holistic approach to talent development, one that balances technical proficiency with essential human skills. In my experience, the ability to communicate effectively and work well with others is fundamental to success in any role. Without these skills, even the most technically proficient individuals struggle to make a meaningful impact in the workplace.
Cultural nuances in learning
While the core skills remain consistent, we’ve learned to adapt our delivery to suit different cultural contexts. Our global presence has allowed us to work with young people from various backgrounds, helping them develop skills that are crucial not just for their careers, but for life.
The importance of local context
Despite the global nature of many businesses, we’ve learned the importance of understanding and respecting local contexts. Our experience across different countries and cultures has given us a unique perspective on how to deliver effective learning experiences that resonate with participants and address the specific challenges they face in their professional environments.
Looking to the future
As we look ahead, we see the world of work continuing to evolve at a rapid pace. The skills that will be most valued are those that allow individuals to adapt, innovate and collaborate across cultural and geographical boundaries.
Our global experience has taught us that successful early talent development must be:
At DBL, we’re excited to continue our global journey, learning from each new experience and culture we encounter. We believe that by sharing these lessons and continually refining our approach, we can play a part in developing a generation of professionals who are prepared for the global workplace.
This commitment to accessible, high-quality early talent development is what drove us to create our DBL elevate programmes. While we’ve historically focused on delivering bespoke training for large corporations, we recognised the need to extend our expertise to a broader audience. DBL elevate, including courses like Career Jump-Start, opens up our globally-tested approaches to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for the first time.
These open courses allow organisations of all sizes to benefit from the insights and methodologies we’ve developed over 15 years of working with some of the world’s leading companies across 12-13 different sectors. By making our programmes more accessible, we’re helping companies bridge the skills gap and set their early career talent up for success, just as we’ve done for larger corporations.
The world may be vast and varied, but the potential of early talent is universal. It’s our privilege to help unlock that potential, one young professional at a time, across the globe, regardless of the size of the organisation they work for.
Bring world-class early talent development to your organisation, no matter its size. Discover our DBL elevate programmes here and see how our global expertise can drive local success in developing your future leaders.
