Challenges

The need for a bottom-up approach to create Glencore leaders of tomorrow who will anticipate, understand, and add value to the future

To reach this goal, the following objectives were identified:

  • Create and support new leaders who are resilient, committed and empowered to move into technical or business leadership roles across the organisation.
  • Increase the internal demand for graduates to support Glencore’s expansion.
  • Enhance the role that graduate managers play in supporting the programme objectives and to improve business retention.

Solutions

Glencore’s environment: DBL contextualised its content to Glencore’s work environment with key behavioural skills mapped to their competency framework.

Rotational Managers’ involvement: to support graduates throughout the programme. This included their active participation during learning interventions, such as the “leadership Conference”, and timely and consistent on-the-job support.

Blended Learning: The New Leaders Graduate Development Programme is a blended learning programme encompassing face-to-face workshops, online learning, resource books, and workbooks.

Tangible results

Demand: internal demand for graduates from the business has increased from 40 in 2022 to 70 in 2023 across 18 disciplines, providing a mix of technical specialist and business function areas.

Retention: over a five-year period (2018 to 2022), Glencore retention was at 83% vs the Australia Mining industry average retention at 69%.

Quality of content: 2023 cohort feedback on the quality of workshop content: was at 91% – Content ratings were up +5% year on year.
